Thank you, Hurston, for bringing zombies to America.

This post is a little different.  I felt like having a bit of fun in this one, so I'm going to share a tidbit about Zora Neale Hurston's work with the Haitian zombi.

Below is an interesting recording of an interview of Zora Neale Hurston on Zombies on the Mary Margaret McBride Show.

To the right you will notice the photograph that Hurston mentions in the interview:

I would like to point out a couple things.  First, the zombies that Hurston mentions are not evil, flesh-eating monsters.  Instead, they are more like dazed plantation workers.  In fact, the first zombie movie, White Zombie included the Haitian type of dazed worker zombie.  It was not until much later that the zombie evolved into the monsters that we all know and love.

Second, Hurston has been credited with bringing zombies to America.  She was already a respected folklorist before she began talking seriously about the possibility of the existence of zombies.  Her photo's debut in Life Magazine gave zombies the last little push they needed into America.  So, if we stretch this to the max, we could technically give Hurston a mighty thanks for being the catalyst which provided us with all the fun zombie movies, novels, songs, etc.
